The difference between water-based and oil-based pigment inks?

1. Classification of inks by color base

A. Dye-based ink (ink with dye as color base);
B. Pigment-based ink (ink with pigment as color base);

2. Classification by solvent:
A. Water-based ink (with water and water-soluble solvent as the main components of the dissolved color base);
B. Oil-based ink (with non-water-soluble solvent as the main component of the dissolved color base)

Water-based ink is referred to as water ink. The main difference between water-based ink and oil-based ink is the difference in solvent. Water-based ink uses water (45%~50%) as solvent, with extremely low VOC content and little pollution to the environment; oil-based ink uses organic solvents (toluene, xylene, industrial alcohol, etc.) as solvent. Printing ink is composed of materials such as binders, fillers, and additives. Organic pigments contain metal elements such as lead, chromium, mercury, and copper, which are toxic and cannot be used for food packaging. Some pigments contain benzidine, which is carcinogenic and should be strictly prohibited. The binder contains about 40-50% organic solvents. Long-term contact will damage human skin. The air has a high content of organic solvents. Passive inhalation can cause diseases to the respiratory system and may also cause chronic poisoning. These materials are very harmful to human health. The volatilization of solvents in oil-based inks causes air pollution, mainly because more organic solvents are used in liquid inks. These organic solvents will also react chemically with some gases in the air to produce odorous chlorine and smoke, seriously polluting the air, affecting the growth of various plants, and destroying the ecological balance.

There are dye inks and pigment inks in water-based inks (the pH value of such inks is generally neutral); there are also dye inks and pigment inks in oil-based inks (the pH value of such inks is generally acidic). Water-based inks and oil-based inks cannot be mixed in the same print head! Oil-based inks (including weak solvent inks) are generally not recommended for use on desktop computers; currently, the most commonly used inks on our desktop computers are water-based dye-based inks and water-based pigment-based inks, generally referred to as dye inks and pigment inks.

Water-based pigment inks may become the mainstream product of inkjet inks in the future: water-based pigment inks are first of all water-based, and the added ingredients are far away from organic solvent ingredients, which are harmless to the human body and the environment. Therefore, they are environmentally friendly inks and are in line with the development direction of today's social civilization. In addition, because the ink is produced with nano-level pigments, it overcomes the sensitivity of dye-based inks to temperature, humidity, atmospheric conditions, light effects, etc., and achieves the ideal effect of waterproof, light-resistant, UV-resistant and non-fading, which just overcomes the defects of traditional inkjet printing. Therefore, there is reason to believe that water-based pigment inks will be the mainstream product of printing inks in the future. Many models have water-based dye-based inks in the original ink cartridges, and their sun protection ability is not as good as that of water-based pigment inks!
