What's the difference between solvent and eco solvent ink?

Solvent ink and eco-solvent ink are both types of wide-format digital printing inks, but they differ in their composition and environmental impact.

Solvent ink is a traditional wide-format ink that uses strong volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as the primary solvent. These inks produce vibrant colors and durable prints, but they also release harmful fumes during the printing process. Solvent inks are often used for outdoor signage, vehicle wraps, and other applications where weather resistance is crucial.

Eco-solvent ink, on the other hand, is a more environmentally friendly alternative. Eco-solvent inks use milder solvents, typically a blend of alcohol-based compounds, that have a lower VOC content. While the image quality and durability may not be quite as high as traditional solvent inks, eco-solvent inks produce fewer harmful emissions and are considered more environmentally sustainable. They are often used for indoor signage, retail displays, and other applications where reduced environmental impact is a priority.

The key differences are:

Solvent Composition: Solvent inks use strong, highly volatile organic solvents, while eco-solvent inks use milder, lower-VOC solvents.
Environmental Impact: Solvent inks release more harmful fumes and have a greater environmental impact, while eco-solvent inks are designed to be more eco-friendly.
Image Quality and Durability: Solvent inks generally produce more vibrant and durable prints, though the quality gap with eco-solvent inks has been narrowing.
Applications: Solvent inks are better suited for outdoor and high-stress applications, while eco-solvent inks are more commonly used for indoor and lower-stress applications.
